Course Description

The Woodsome Hall golf course was originally designed by W. H. Colt in 1921/2, and was constructed under the auspices of William Button of Redcar, who later became the club's first professional.

The majority of The Woodsome Hall course played today was re-designed or 'fine-tuned' by legendary golf course architect James Braid, whose talent has brought us some of the finest courses in the world today. Braid was approached to review the course and lend his 'Midas Touch' in 1929 to which he made certain suggestions, particularly to some of the tees, in 1930. Most of these alterations were carried out under the direction of Jack Nield, the club's second professional.

The course is truly an exceptional piece of work, with some long par-5s, testing par-3s, very narrow fairways and well manicured greens for golfers to negotiate.

It measures just over 5807 yards over eighteen holes, but given that the par is 70, it is no walk in the park, with plenty to keep you on your toes throughout. Accuracy, concentration and patience are the key to scoring well.

History
Early in the 16th century a gentleman named Arthur Kay finished the new Yorkshire stone slate roof on his 'crook frame' manor house. By 1517, a large stone building (the beginnings of the hall) had replaced the manor house. Prior to this the Kays (later Kayes) came to Woodsome in 1378 and remained there for 348 years. Only when they ‘ran out’ of sons in 1726 and eldest daughter, Elizabeth, married the heir to the Earl of Dartmouth , did the name change , and the association between Woodsome and the Dartmouth family began. Today, nearly three hundred years later, it still exists with the current Earl holding the office of club president; a wonderful and valued piece of historical continuity.

The Hall was a thriving family home from the 14th century until the early years of the 20th century.  The house itself is a perfect example of its type, both inside and out. Simply a beautiful building with an original stone-floored main corridor and superbly proportioned rooms, The Mixed Lounge being a consummate illustration of this feature. Read the full history here.

Whilst the Golf Club itself was only founded in 1922. the present Woodsome Hall has evolved over many centuries and is mainly the work of Arthur Kaye, who in 1517 married Beatrix and took his bride to the new Woodsome Hall. Earlier recorded owners / dwellers do however go back to 1086 A.D.

In 1922, the club was granted a lease to the house of Woodsome and the 134 acres which comprised the estate. The estate was finally purchased outright by the Golf Club in 1939, ending some 560 years of ownership by the Kayes and their descendants the Earls of Dartmouth.
