Best Par 3 Holes
|
|
Par 3 holes are usually the most
memorable on a golf course and the ones that are often fondly
remembered after a round of golf. Here we list the Huddersfield
area's best short holes and tell you why!
|
|
|
|
|
#1 - Halifax Golf
Club #17 (178 yards)
|
|
Why? The 17th hole at Halifax Golf
Club is one of the most talked about short holes in the region. The
main talking point is the height differential between the tee and
the green which is several feet below.
The reason we list this as one of
the best par 3's in the area is not only the dreaded uncertainty
that you get on the tee when deciding which club to choose but the
timing of the hole with it being the penultimate hole. From the
moment you tee off on the second hole which is adjacent to the 17th
green the prospect of playing the signature hole prays on the mind.
The small brook and greenside bunker are the least of a players
worries when stood on the tee up in the clouds.
The excitement and thrill from
seeing your ball hang in the air for what seems like an eternity
while you wonder if your ball will land on the green and the joy it
brings when it does is the reason we rate it as the best! Two's are
a rarity on this hole but long remembered when they arrive.

#2 - Crosland Heath
Golf Club # 9 (151 yards)
|
|
Why? An island green with a
difference. By no means the longest short hole but with the majority
of the green surrounded by steep drops lined with heather to deep
valleys below, this is not a green to miss.
The reason we list this amongst our
favourite short holes is the challenge presented of trying to hit
the green. What is actually a relatively big target appears much
smaller on when stood on the tee. The elements also make this a
great hole when even a slight breeze can change your club selection
by a number of clubs. Holes #2 and #17 are similar to this hole but
don't quite make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end
like the 9th does.
The backdrop to the hole with an
old stone wall underling the Huddersfield Town centre landscape
makes you feel on top of the world. A birdie two also gives you the
same feeling.

|
#3 - Huddersfield
Golf Club #8 (161 yards)
|
|
Why? Huddersfield Golf Club has a
plethora of well designed, strong par three holes. Every short hole
at Fixby offers a different challenge although excellent bunkering
and cunning greens remain a constant throughout.
The eighth hole stands out the most
exceptional of a very good bunch. Again it is not the length that
provides the biggest challenge but the superb bunkering and variety
of hole locations. The two bunkers to the right of the green are
imposing and their faces look almost vertical. This tends to make
the golfer aim further to the left but a bunker here and the slope
of the green from left to right mean that missing there is almost a guaranteed
bogey.
The green is much longer than it
appears when stood on the tee and the clever placement of the hole
can make it very tempting to go for when really the middle of the
green should be your target. The fir trees behind the green and rhododendrons
to the flanks frame the hole beautifully.

#4 - Willow Valley
Golf and Country Club #6 (188 yards)
|
|
Why? Some golfers seem to have and allergic
reaction when faced with a shot across water. There is plenty of
water at Willow Valley and it is used to no better effect than on
the short sixth hole.
We rank this as one of the area's
best because whilst the water is obviously there and visible it is
not over imposing and blends into the setting of the hole and adds
to the hole but doesn't dominate it. A well executed shot is
required otherwise you will be hearing a splash but the secret to
this hole is that the depth of the green is actually much deeper
than the thin slither it appears when on the teeing ground.

|
#5 - Woodsome Hall
#3 (204 yards)
|
|
Why? Over 200 yards to a two tiered
platform green with nothing for left, a valley short and a testing
shot from the right makes this a very tough par 3. Toughness and
length doesn't necessarily equate to quality but in this case it
does.
The reason we have chosen this hole
is because it comes so early in the round and after a very difficult
and long second hole. It is rare to be tested with a long iron or
wood at such an early stage and a par on this hole can be the base
for a successful round.

|
|
#6 - Meltham #17
(182 yards)
|
|
Why? Similar to the 17th hole at
Halifax, the timing of this hole is key. A really well executed and shaped
shot is required to find the green and a ball ending up anywhere
else requires an excellent recovery shot to save par.
|
|
|
|
#7 - Dewsbury #9
(132 yards)
|
|
Why? A mere flick of a hole which
plays only a short iron is complicated by the proximity of the out
of bounds to the left of the green and MacKenzie style contouring of
the green makes hitting the green the easy part and holing out a
fresh challenge.
|
|
|
|
#8 - Hanging Heaton
#4 and #13 (249 yards)
|
|
Why? A long shot over a quarry which
is out of bounds to a blind green gives the golfer great
anticipation when walking to the green after a good shot to see how
close the ball is to the hole.
|
|
|
|
#9 - Halifax
Bradley Hall #18 (165 yards)
|
|
Why? This is the last hole you want to
play if you require a par to play under you handicap. A vicious two-tiered
green make this a testing hole which is usually played into a cross
wind.
|
|
|
|
#10 - Halifax West
End #1 (124 yards)
|
|
Why? Not many courses start with a par
three and although architecturally this is not the best hole the
artificial pond which is more for ornamental purposes captures more
golf balls due to golfers struggling with first tee nerves!
