Open Competitions 2008

Course Description

Although not the longest course in the region, the nine-hole course at Lightcliffe Golf Club measures only 5660 yards when played as an eighteen-hole for which it offers a generous par of 68.

Do not underestimate this heathland course, however, as it possesses more than just the occasional obstacle for you to successfully negotiate in order to come away with a scorecard to show off in the fabulous clubhouse.

It has undulating fairways that will test your accuracy from the tee as well as your knowledge of your irons for making those tricky approach shots. The host of natural hazards makes things a little more interesting and adds character to the course so be sure to give it your complete attention or face the consequences.

History
Founded in 1907 and open for golf in 1908 the clubhouse still retains the originality of the 1908 building but with extensions being built over the years to provide all the usual facilities.

The original north-south setting was changed to the present east-west layout in 1948 and was the creation of Maurice Hellewell, who designed the course whilst being held prisoner by the Japanese during World War II. Since then little has changed except extensive drainage work.
