"Playing
on top of the world with views as fine and
awe-inspiring as on any course anywhere".
Crosland
Heath Golf Club which is the second highest course in England,
offers a good flat heathland challenge for all levels of
golfer, made more interesting by the prevailing wind
when it blows.
The natural layout with crevasses and
rocks is enhanced by the heather rough and
strategically placed bunkers plus extensive views. The fairways and greens
are maintained in excellent condition, and the course
consistently receives compliments from visitors
playing it.
History
In
1896 a 9 hole golf course was opened at Cowersley.
It remained there until 1913 when the land it
was built upon was required for building. The club
members at the time viewed the present site seeking
the opinion of renowned golf course architect Dr
MacKenzie of Leeds, designer of Augusta National,
venue of the US Masters. He was extremely impressed by
the possibilities of the terrain, particularly the
quarries, which could be made outstanding features of
the course.
The present layout of
the course is due in no small measure to the hard work
of the original members who, in their determination to
establish their golf course, rolled up their sleeves
and worked tirelessly clearing heather, pulling down
stone walls and shaping fairways.
In 1920 the members
took the bold step of purchasing the land which had previously
been leased. A meeting was held at the Queen's Hotel
and the sum of £2000 was raised. This purchased three
parts of the 92 acres, the fourth part being secured
privately. Thus, in 1920 Crosland Heath became a
private company, putting it in an enviable sound
financial position.
