This year has got off to a good start with a win in the Alliance! What are your main goals for 2007?
My main goal as always is to win every time I play. I know this sounds obvious but I feel if I am good enough to play in the competition, I am good enough to win it.
What do you class as your biggest strength within your game?
I would say my iron play is the strongest, I used to be really inconsistent with my irons but I have worked hard on improving this aspect. I am usually pretty straight off the tee as well.
And the weakest?
I never really been a good putter, I am pretty solid at holing out from 5 feet and in, but don't really convert enough birdie putts from hitting solid shots into the greens.
What specific area about your game will you be looking to improve in 2007 with coach John Eyre?
John and I intend to work hard on improving the weak parts to my swing and also as John is a Putting Zone coach we will work hard on my putting technique too. I have worked with John for about 6 years, nobody knows my swing like he does and I feel this is invaluable in my aim to improve and get to where I want to.
2006 was a year in which you helped Meltham win the Scratch Team Championship, you won the Junior Matchplay title and was runner up in the Senior Matchplay. Which was the biggest highlight for you?
Although it may sound strange to say, one of my highlights was losing in the matchplay final, I feel I gained a lot of experience playing against Andy Whitworth and I probably learned more from losing than if I had won. I would also like to say what a great achievement it was for Andy to win his tenth title. Winning both the scratch championships with Meltham for the first time in the clubs history was superb.
Although you will be playing for Meltham in 2007 you plan on practicing with Chris Hanson a lot at Crosland Heath. How has Chris helped your game so far?
How many people can say that they get to practice with one of the best up and coming pro's in the country? I can't thank Chris enough for helping me with my game, the biggest think i can take from Chris would be his temperament as nothing seems to faze him. Also the experience I gained caddying for him at Q-School in Spain last year was invaluable.
You have just got some new woods in the bag, what was the reason behind the change?
I have never really had a driver I have been happy with so I decided to go to the Titleist fitting centre with Chris and get fitted on the launch monitor. If you are wanting to compete at the highest level you need to take full advantage of the technology available. I now have a Titleist 905R driver with 906F2 PT 3 and 5 woods in the bag.
You currently train regularly at the gym, what are the main aspects you are currently working on and why?
I am currently doing weight training to try and add muscle, I have never been a long hitter so hopefully if I can put on some weight, I will be able to catch up with the bigger hitters. And if you want to be the best you can be you have to train in every aspect not only on the driving range.
Briefly describe your experiences playing for the Scottish Boys Under 16's:
The lads I played with for the Scotland team were some of the best lads I've met and I had some of my best golfing experiences playing in those matches. I traveled up to play in both Scottish Boys Championships but put it very disappointing performances, especially as if I had done really well in both there was a chance of getting back involved with the Scotland national squad. Which I had managed to play for at u16 level 2 years previous. I will again be traveling up to St Andrews Bay to play in the Northern Open Qualifier, which is a Scottish PGA event, last year I managed to qualify, but in the comp I struggled on the first day and despite playing a decent second round didn't make the cut, but it was still good to play with some of the top pro's in Scotland.
Where would you like to be golf wise in 3 years time?
I hope in 3 years time that I will still be able to play golf, due to the financial implications in playing full time amateur golf I may find it hard to still be playing competitively in 3 years time. Unless I can progress quickly and make the transition into professional golf. Saying that, all I can do is to continue working as hard as I can and to see what happens between now and then.
Will you miss playing junior events?
Definitely I have been playing junior golf for a good number of years now and it will be different this year, knowing I wont be part of the Meltham and Union junior teams
Is the mental side of golf anything you work on?
I worked a couple of years ago with a psychologist, but I do not plan on seeing anyone in the near future. If I can work on controlling my emotions on the course I should be ok.
What have been the biggest influences on your career so far?
Representing Scotland was fantastic and I feel my golf would not have improved in the same way if I had not had the chance to play at that level.
Name your ideal golfing 4-Ball and let us know who is your golfing role model?
Me, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan. Tiger Woods is superb. I feel he is a role model for everyone. Everything about him is professional, he has the complete package which is why he is the best player in the world
What are your main hobbies when not playing golf, what is your
favourite music?
I really enjoy training at the gym, I workout 5 times a week at the gym and also at home. I recently watched my first Huddersfield Giants match so I might start watching them. I listen to some r'n'b but mainly hip-hop is what you would find on my ipod.
Do you record statistics of your rounds?
I always critique every round, I only count fairways hit, greens hit and putts per round. I feel people get too bogged down with their stats. As long as you are aware of your weaknesses and what you need to improve that is all you need to know really.
Do you prefer Matchplay or Strokeplay events, and why?
I really enjoy going head to head in a matchplay match, but I feel if you are wanting to make it as a professional you have to be a good
stroke player, so for that reason I feel it is more important to be good at putting the numbers together in a strokeplay comp.
Is diet a big factor for you? What is your favourite food?
Diet is an important part for me, but this has only been since I joined the gym about 3 months ago, my diet consists of a lot of protein and carbs. I would have to say my favourite food is pizza.
What is the best golf course you have ever played, do you like links golf?
I wouldn't say I've played a really fantastic course but I would say
Macrahanish has got some great holes and the scenery is superb. I really enjoy the test of links golf, I've played a lot of links golf in Scotland and you definitely get what you deserve out of the round, play well and you will be rewarded.
Where do you place the importance of education in a young golfers career, what advise would you give to a 14/15 year old who wants to play golf for a living and turn professional?
Education is important because if you don't make it on the professional circuit, you have something to fall back on.
Thanks for your time Toby in answering our questions, good luck for the coming season:
Thanks.
