James Thompson Q&A Interview

Read the exclusive interview below with local amateur golfer James Thompson from Meltham Golf Club.

James Thompson Golfer - Meltham Golf Club

You were the 2005 HHDUGC Junior Matchplay Runner-Up (to Richard Broadley) and a losing Quarter Finalist in 2006. Is another strong performance high on your priority list for this year?
Yes, hope fully I can go all the way.

You will go into this event as one of the favourites. Who do you feel are your main competitors for the title?
I think my main competitors will be Sam Bridges, Danny Crisp and Alex Battye.

What are your other main goals for 2007?
My mane goals for 2007 will be to try and stop shot wasting, this will include having a solid pre shot routine and thinking more conservatively on the course. Also I will be aiming to do the best  I can in every comp I play in. In the coming season I will also take on some mental advice which is, to stay in the here and now and not to plan ahead.

Do you prefer a matchplay or strokeplay format, and why?
I don't really have a favourite, I think that strokeplay is as important as matchplay and it is vital to be good at both!

What do you class as your biggest strength within your game?
The biggest strength in my game is probably my driving of the ball I am usually quite straight.

And the weakest?
The weakest part of my game is probably my pitching. Up until last year I hadn't seen the importance of being good from 100 yards in. I feel in most of my rounds last year I had put myself in many great positions for birdie and not converted them!

Last year amongst other things you helped Meltham win the HHDUGC Junior Foursomes and Scratch League titles. Do you enjoy representing your club and what are your expectations for this year?
I love representing my club. I think if we can have a repeat performance this year it will be great! At my golf club (Meltham) I have become a popular member and have been supported by everyone, especially Chris Mear who has supported
me by giving me the opportunity to play for the Junior and Senior Halifax and Huddersfield teams too.

You had some good results for the HHDUGC Senior Team last year, what are your expectations for the coming season?
Well I would really like to win the Order of Merit but I think my goal is to do better than I have done in the previous year, so I would be happy coming 2nd in the order of merit. Playing for the team has helped my golf as I have played many different courses and played against many different opponents of high ability.

Tell us what equipment you are currently using in your golf bag:
Currently I am using a Nike Ignite driver and a TaylorMade Vsteel 3 wood. I will be changing woods because I feel they do not fit my game anymore.

Where would you like to be golf wise in 3 years time?
In 3 years time I would like to be in the States studying and playing college golf.

You will be competing in some of the Yorkshire Order of Merit events this season. Which ones are you looking forward to playing in the most and how do you feel you will compete?
The comps I will be most looking forward to will be: The Hawksworth Trophy and Moortown Masters. Over the past few years I have got a lot better at playing away from my home course. I hope I can contend for the top 10 places.

Is playing for your county (Yorkshire) an ambition?
Playing for my county is an ambition. I would love to represent them. This year I have been put in the Yorkshire Elite Boys squad where over the winter I have been down to Woodhall Spa and Malton to train with coaches Graham Walker and Steve Robinson.

Name your ideal golfing 4-Ball and let us know who is your golfing role model?
My ideal 4 ball would be me, Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan and Adam Scott.

What are your main hobbies when not playing golf?
Well, as I am a student I have limited time during the week. Over the winter I have joined a gym to improve my upper body strength.

Do you record statistics of your rounds?
I haven't really recorded any but after each round I see what has been my weakness in the round and try improve upon them. eg fairways hit, G.I.R. etc...

You will be playing number one again for the HHDUGC Junior Team in 2007. What are the teams main strengths and do you feel you can win the Yorkshire League?
I feel the main strength in our team is team spirit. We all have a
good laugh together and get on!! I think we are good enough to win the league but on the day we have to perform.

Toby Garrett, who has also just done a Q&A Interview, is a good friend of yours. Is there a lot of competition between the two of you on the golf course?
I think last year there was more competition because we were the top juniors in the Halifax and Huddersfield Union so we were competing against each other. However in 2007 Toby wont be a junior anymore and we wont be able to compete for junior titles.

What is the best golf course you have ever played?
I haven't really played many great courses, but the best ones I have played are Longnidry in Scotland and Ganton in North Yorkshire, as these have been the toughest ones I have played.

Do you have aspirations to turn professional and play golf full-time for a living?
I would love to turn professional because tour pro's are always traveling around the world and playing in hot weather!

What are you currently working on with your coach John Eyre?
Over the winter I have been working on getting my arms more in front of my body at impact. This should improve both distance and accuracy in my game. Through the years of being with John we have become good friends and I feel I can ask him anything about my game.

You have won the Meltham Junior Matchplay for the past 3 years, do you think you will make it 4 in a row this year?
I have every intention in making it four years in a row, as I will become the only junior to do it in the history of the competition.

Briefly describe your experience of the Faldo Series:
A few years ago I heard that the prizes in the Faldo series were great, as Nick Faldo was sponsored by Nike. If you won a competition you won a Nike driver etc... but in 2005 nick Faldo lost his sponsor and could not afford to award such great prizes. But an advantage to playing in the Faldo Series is that you can play great courses for a good price!

Tell us about your education and future plans to study in the States.
Currently I am at Greenhead College studying for my A-levels. I do Business Studies, Art and P.E. After I finish college I am planning on taking half a year out to earn some money and improve my golf. After this I want to go to the States to a
university to play golf and to further my education at the same time. College golf is very big over in the States where a typical day would be lessons in the morning then practise in the afternoon. On most weekends there will be competitions staged by the N.C.A.A. for college teams to compete in. I also feel this will be great experience being away from home and being completely independent away from parents!!!

Thanks for your time James  in answering our questions, good luck for the coming season:
Thank-you!!
