Pre-Shot Routine by Drew Wallace
Intro
Chris (Hanson) and I have spent a considerable amount of time producing pre-shot routines in every area of his game. Below is some information on pre-shot routines and why they are so important.
Physical but No Mental
Most players have a physical routine but leave the mental side to chance. You must develop a routine which accounts for the physical and mental actions in the run-up to playing the shot. When under pressure, people resort to what they are most used to doing. If this is a well-planned and practised pre-shot routine then you will be able to perform under pressure. If not, it is a lottery.
Write it Down
It is crucial that the routine is written down and used in practice as well as competition. Another reason for developing a routine is to make all shots seem as similar as possible regardless of the circumstances (i.e a shot in practice as similar as possible to a shot to win the U.S Open). Players often focus too much on the outcome or consequences of the shot rather than simply thinking of what they are trying to do with the ball. One of the most important parts of the pre-shot routine is picking a precise target and being absolutely sure how the ball is going to get there. Another useful piece of information is that ideally the number of practice swings in the routine should be consistent but not so rigid that in some occasions it makes you feel uncomfortable.
Quotes
Below are some quotes regarding pre-shot routines which you may be able to relate, find useful and increase your understanding about the importance of a good pre-shot routine:
· “The foundation of consistency is a good pre-shot routine” (Rotella, 1995).
· “A golfer must expect only 2 things from himself: to have fun, and to focus his mind properly on every shot” (Rotella, 1995).
· “Before taking any shot, a golfer must pick out the smallest target possible” (Rotella, 1995).
· “It is more important to be decisive than to be correct when preparing to play a golf shot or putt” (Rotella, 1995).
· “You cannot hit a ball consistently if you think about the mechanics of the swing as you play” (Rotella, 1995).
